N2 - The important role of servicing, maintenance, and repair of automobiles in the GDR was caused by a planned lack of support infrastructures, by the role of a do-it-yourself mentality in socialist societies and by specifics of the vehicles themselves. Tinkering is analysed as a more general form of automobile use and of a relation between man and technology, not limited to socialist societies. User qualification, leisure activities, education and skill prestige are contexts of conceptualisation. Within the framework of automobile history tinkering and private work on cars is seen as possibility to modify the products of a fordistic car culture into sloanism, employing and fostering technological creativity ‚from below‘.
