  • The publications of the historian and Auschwitz survivor Joseph Wulf were controversial, as was his initiative to establish an ‘International Documentation Center for the Investigation of National Socialism and its After-effects’ in West Berlin. In particular, the designated location, the house in which the Wannsee Conference had taken place in 1942, led to heated debate which spilled beyond the borders of the Federal Republic in 1966-67. Symptomatic of this dispute was the bitter correspondence between Wulf and the provost of Berlin, Heinrich Grüber. Both men, who had opposed National Socialism and had been persecuted, took different sides on the debate; Grüber advocated keeping the Wannsee villa as an educational youth hostel. The article describes this personal clash and interprets it in relation to political and social discourse about National Socialism in the mid-1960s, a time when attitudes towards historical sites like the House of the Wannsee Conference were fundamentally different than they are today.
