  • The article deals with mosques and other socio-cultural spaces of Islam in Germany. It covers the history of mosques from the eighteenth century with a particular focus on mosques housed in reused buildings or in ‘backyards’, which have been increasingly replaced with modern mosque buildings since the 1980s, and whose greater public visibility has been accompanied by a heightened potential for conflict over Islam. By drawing attention to various socio-cultural spaces of Islam, the author shows that ‘Islam’ may not be exclusively associated with ‘the mosque’. The various currents of Islam have also found expression in associations, welfare and educational institutions, which are connected to both religious and non-religious functions to varying degrees. The fact that non-Muslims in Germany have largely become aware of the existence of Islam only since the creation of new mosque buildings is an anachronism. Hence further research in contemporary history and religious studies could help to raise awareness of pluralism within both Islam and society at large.
