This article evaluates a variety of recent attempts to conceptualize a historyof innovations from the perspective of social history. Special emphasis is given toapproaches arguing for a paradigm shift from innovation systems to innovationcultures, in particular by focussing on users as co-designers of technology. Theconcept of the co-construction of technology has been implemented especially in thethematic field of the integration and disintegration of Europe. The growing circulationof scientific knowledge and technical goods resulted in the “invention of European-ness” in the long 20th century. This article contributes to the discussion by examiningscientifically constructed user projections in the American and German automobileindustries.
When does stress – understood as a bodily and psychological condition connected to rapid social change and the pressure to perform – become a social concern? Previous historical research has situated the topic exclusively in the West: stress as a characteristic condition of what is understood to be Western capitalism. Using the examples of the state socialist GDR and Czechoslovakia in the 1960s – 1980s, this contribution demonstrates how stress became a broad social concern in a non-liberal, noncapitalist context. It thereby challenges the notion that stress is a Western phenomenon, proposing instead to see it in the context of developed and “multiple” modernities.
Langfristige Ursprünge und dauerhafte Auswirkungen. Zur historischen Einordnung der siebziger Jahre
(2008)
“Security” is such a general concept that, on the one hand, it is omnipresent in all fields of historical research; on the other hand, a closer look reveals that there seems not to exist a real specialized sub-discipline or field that bears this title. While in political sciences, criminology, sociology and jurisprudence, and especially in the field of international relations, security studies is a well established and broad field of research, history has not yet established a corresponding field. This special issue about “Security and Epochal Frontiers” shows that important contemporaneous changes in concept and practices of “security production” after the end of the Cold War (the emergence of “extended, comprehensive, human security”, the fading away of the border between internal and external security) have caused our historical perception of “security” to change massively and historiography to respond to this challenge.
Towards Another Concept of the State: Historiography of the 1970s in the USA and Western Europe
(2011)
After years of neglect, the 1970s have recently entered the array of academic interest. In the USA and in Western Europe a growing number of historians are finally pulling the decade out of the shadows of the 1960s and the 1980s. As can be expected in such an early phase of academic exploration, there is still littel that ties all publications about the Seventies together.
During the 1970s liberal social scientists and leftist activists discussed the possible decriminalization of pedophilia. The essay argues that, while rooted in the “sexual revolution,” this debate can only be comprehended if one considers customary practices of education. The essay explores the often violent situation in residential child homes and its critique by the New Left (“Heimkampagne”) and inquires into ideas about children and young persons’ own agency. The juxtaposition of physical violence and seemingly unproblematic sexuality made advocacy for pedophiliac contacts plausible, to the degree that some adolescents of the Nuremberg “Indianerkommune” even claimed right to these encounters.
