Zur Bonn-Nostalgie Westdeutschlands gehörte die Anhänglichkeit an das Provisorium der Nachkriegszeit, verbunden mit der Absage an staatliche Symbole und internationale politische Verantwortung. Nach dem Umzug nach Berlin kam die Prussifizierung der deutschen Nation. Sie fand ihr Sinnbild in der Rekonstruktion des Schlosses in der Hauptstadt. Von 2013 bis 2020 konnten sich die Berliner allmählich auf die neue Kulisse einstellen. Zuvor, von 2006-2008 konnte man sich vom Palast der Republik verabschieden. Der Abbau dauerte fast drei Jahre, weil das Gebäude aufgrund seiner hohen Asbestbelastung nicht einfach weggesprengt werden konnte. Mit dem Palast der Republik verschwand mit der DDR Geschichte auch der historische Ort, an dem 17 Jahre zuvor die deutsche Einheit beschlossen wurde.
The article traces the collective term “living history” in its various definitions, forms and manifestations, offering an overview of this widespread phenomenon. It will consider developments in the United States and Europe, as well as taking a look at historical precursors of present-day forms. Whereas living history in the Anglo-American world has long been a well-established part of the educational and cultural work of museums, in Germany there is still a great deal of skepticism towards this form of historical representation. Finally, it asks how the fields of history and cultural studies might best engage with living history and which theoretical approaches exist for investigating and analyzing living history.
