  • By referring to the German example, this article contributes towards the history of models of order during the twentieth century. It brings the catchword ‘Fordism’ into focus by drawing readers’ attention to the production line, revealing the impact of Fordism and Taylorism and their concepts of rationalisation and efficiency in the area of factory work. After explaining how Fordism and Taylorism arose, the authors consider changes on the shop floor and their implementation in the various political systems. Fordist elements occur in both democratic and dictatorial contexts. They explain how Fordist working patterns, designed along rationalistic lines to increase efficiency, influence the entrepreneurs’ power structures in relation to employment on the assembly line and the workers’ means of resistance. The article closes with an outline of Postfordism and ‘new concepts of production’.
